In 1962 Algeria gained independence from France, which was when their
flag was officially adopted. Originally thought to be used to fight
French colonisation by patriots in the early 19th century but now thought
it was designed to fight independence for the National Liberation Movement
since 1928.The colour green on the flag is the colour of Islam while
the colour white means purity. In the centre of the flag there is a
crescent, the horns stand for increased good fortune as they are longer
than usual the whole symbol represents Ottoman ruling the country during
the 16th century while the colour red means 'liberty' The star of Islam
is also found in the centre of the flag as part of the emblem.
