FLAG OF ALGERIA

North Africa

In 1962 Algeria gained independence from France, which was when their flag was officially adopted. Originally thought to be used to fight French colonisation by patriots in the early 19th century but now thought it was designed to fight independence for the National Liberation Movement since 1928.The colour green on the flag is the colour of Islam while the colour white means purity. In the centre of the flag there is a crescent, the horns stand for increased good fortune as they are longer than usual the whole symbol represents Ottoman ruling the country during the 16th century while the colour red means 'liberty' The star of Islam is also found in the centre of the flag as part of the emblem.
