In 1901 the Australian flag was adopted when the country gained its independence. The use of the British flag on the Australian flag shows the ties between both countries. The largest star on the flag is called the Commonwealth Star the points on the star represent the members of the Federation, the five other stars are of the Southern Cross constellation.
