North West Europe
In 1831 the Belgium flag was adopted, but the colours from the flag
have been used since before independence. In the original flag the stripes
were horizontal and were changed to vertical stripes after independence
and they generally mean liberty and revolution this way. The colour
black on the flag is taken from the shield of arms, the colour gold
is the same colour as the lion in the arms and the last stripe on the
flag is red which is taken from the claws and tongue of the lion.
